Tree cash crop farmers at the Sunyani West District (SWD) of the Bono Region had received more than140,000 improved cashew seedlings under the government’s Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) program.
The PERD was initiated by Ghana government to boost agriculture and enhance socioeconomic development of farmers and rural communities.
Mr. Martin Obeng, the Sunyani West District Chief Executive (DCE), did the presentation of the improved cashew seedlings to some of the farmers on Monday, and said 1,400 farmers would get the free seedlings this year.
He said two acre land seedlings would be distributed to the doorstep of each farmer who registered to be part of the program in the district, and added that agric extension officers would guide the farmers to do the planting.
The DCE said cashew and oil palm plantation are those under the PERD program in the district but cashew is ready for distribution this year.
He assured farmers not to loss hope in the cashew farming, saying that, government plans are far advanced to establish national cashew nut board to see a standard pricing of the nut.
