The Sunyani Traditional Council has on Thursday inaugurated a group named ‘Sunyani Development Stakeholders Association’ to lead and ensure the City gets it fair share of the national cake in terms of socioeconomic development.

The Association comprises business men, entrepreneurs, members of youth groups and people from the diaspora who are indigenous citizens of Sunyani and representatives from the Traditional Council who have come together for a common goal.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony in Sunyani on behalf of Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, the Paramount Chief of the area, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio, the Akwamuhene said the Traditional Council has vested its authority to the Association to ensure anything of development comes to Sunyani.

According to him, Sunyani has for many years been left behind in national developmental project which other places enjoy hence, the need for such Association as pressure group to champion the course of Sunyani’s development which is paramount at this crucial time and must be given the needed support from all angles.

He cited educational infrastructure, roads, markets among other important projects have been ongoing elsewhere in the country, whereas Sunyani has been bemoaning lack of project completion for the past 15 to 40 years.
Adding that this phenomenon cause us to wonder in awe and charged the people of Sunyani to rise and demand their share of development.

Mrs. Justice Mavis Akua Andoh, the Sunyani Commercial Division ‘B’ High Court Judge led the 19 member Association executives to swear the Oath of Office and Secrecy.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. George Kumi, Ghana’s former Ambassador to Libya who is the Chairman of the Association told members to bury their political affiliations and focus on only issues of Sunyani’s welfare.
“This Association is non-political” and anyone with political or self interest must put them aside because politicians have failed and fooled the people of Sunyani for so long which should be a thing of the past, he stressed.

In an optional speech, Lawyer Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate who represented the Ghana Bar Association stated “We must fix Sunyani”, adding that regardless of ethnic background, everybody must show concern in seeking development for the area he or she lives.

Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) further stated it is worrying that the only West African Forestry school which is situated in Sunyani has to be converted into a branch of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and has now metamorphosed to UENR.

Same, he regretted can be said of the existing Sunyani Technical University which also robbed Sunyani of its Technical Institute to Polytechnic and now Technical University.

In a courtesy call paid on him in Sunyani on Friday, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, the Paramount Chief congratulated the Association and encouraged them to resist anything inimical to Sunyani’s development.

“You have come at the right time and I know you would not disappoint me, claim back Sunyani’s glory”, he said.
“Don’t be discouraged, am with you in spirit, fight for any remedy to help Sunyani”, the Paramount chief charged the Association.
